Hajj

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. The performance of Hajj involves a visit to al-Ka'bah in Makkah (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia during the 8-13 days of the Muslim month of Dhul Hijjah. The obligation only extends to those who are physically fit and/or wealthy enough to make the journey (al-Qur'an: 3.97; 22.27-30; 2.197)

Al-Ka'bah is also known as Baitullah (house of Allah). It is a cube-shaped single-storey building built by the Prophet Ibrahim (aws) and his son Ismail (aws).

There are a number of actions, obligations and restrictions associated with Hajj. Obligations include:

  • Putting on Ihram at Miqat (2.200)
  • Tawaf - the act of circling al-Ka'bah 7 times
  • A fast walk between as-Safa and al-Manwah (2.158)
  • Visiting and staying at Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah (2.198)
  • Throwing pebbles at the columns in Mina (2.200)
  • Shaving or trimming hair (2.200; 48.27)
  • Sacrifice of an animal (2.196, 200)

Restrictions include:

  • The use of perfume
  • Killing or harming animals, even insects
  • Carrying arms
  • Clipping nails
  • Conjugal relations

One of the most important actions during the Hajj involves drinking from the well of Zamzam. The well was discovered by Hajar, the mother of the prophet Ismail (aws), as she ran between as-Safa and al-Manwah in search of water.

IOL Virtual Hajj in Second Life
06 December 2007
Mohammad Yahia, IOL Staff

CAIRO — Have you ever dreamed of being able to be part of the full hajj experience without leaving your home? Today, that is possible with the launch of IslamOnline.net's educational hajj program on the virtual world of Second Life.

"I think this would be an unparalleled experience for anyone who is going to go to hajj and is unsure of what should and should not be done," says Breathe Swindlehurst, IOL's coordinator in Second Life.

As part of its mission statement to better educate Muslims worldwide about their faith, IOL will launch the hajj educational program on December 9, on its own island inside Second Life.

The program is a powerful educational tool for people embarking on the soul-searching journey, in the real world, or anyone else who wants to learn about it.
