The Captain: began life as a travelling student of Islamic knowledge, but became a professional seafarer early in his career, ostensibly due to this love of the sea, but in truth in order to better pursue his passionate love of young men. At the same time, he regularly denounces gay sexuality as immoral, publicly and vehemently, in order to avoid arousing suspicion. The central dramatic crisis of the voyage is when his lover is caught having sex with Idrisi's secretary.
